The Gary NSA III Apartments are comprised of four separate buildings located in Gary, Indiana.  All of them are four-story buildings originally constructed in the 1920's with brick load bearing walls and wood floor framing.  Our evaluation focused on the large deflections of the upper floors.  We visited the apartment buildings to determine the condition of the existing floor structures.  We were also involved in the design of reinforcement to correct structural inadequacies and re-level the floors in the buildings.
Tools Of The Trade
The foot was the original ruler and the thumb was the original inch.  If you could take three of your feet and lay them end to end, they would reach from the tip of your nose to the end of your outstretched arm, or as we like to say nowadays, a yard.  Since people's body parts are handy, it was convenient.  But because they come in all different sizes, it lacked something in consistency from one craftsman to another.  So rulers, yardsticks, tape measures and other tools were developed to create a standard that meant the same thing to everyone.
Rulers, yardsticks and tape measures may not be very sophisticated tools.  But they are state-of-the art compared to the thumbs, feet, and arms used long ago.
